So Long to Social Distancing, Part II

As I noted in recent post, one of the most noteworthy aspects of the Wuhan virus pandemic is the amount of hypocrisy exhibited by public officials who have declared businesses non-essential, imposed state-wide lockdowns, limited diners at restaurants, etc., only to cavort openly with Black Lives Matter adherents, march with large groups of protesters or attend rallies against systemic racism and/or white oppression. The hypocrisy hasn’t stopped (are you surprised??). Take California Governor Gavin Newsom. For months Governor Newsom has been telling Californians that they shouldn’t socialize outside the home and when they socialize do so outdoors and in small groups.

State health officials have said gatherings should be limited to 10 people from no more than three households.

On November 6th, the governor and his wife attended a dinner party for 12 people. It was a birthday party for a former campaign aid of the governor, who is now a lobbyist. They held the party at the ritzy Napa Valley restaurant, the French Laundry, which has a $350 per person prix fixe menu.

Another diner took pictures of Governor Newsom and his wife sitting maskless with equally unmasked diners. The meal was supposedly in an “outside” space, but because the group was so loud, other diners complained and doors were closed, thereby making the space “inside” and compounding the groups’ violation of one of Governor Newsom’s orders.

The rules, you peasants, are for thee, not me.

Governor Newsom has taken some heat from columnists and other state politicians and public health officials.

Of course, Governor Newsom is not the only one. How about New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio, U. S. Senator Chuck Schumer, Washington D. C. Mayor Muriel Bower, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker? Brianna Lyman at the Daily Caller is keeping a running list. She could also add this big city mayor and this Canadian mayor who has “zero tolerance” for lockdown violators.

Will the shenanigans of these politicians influence their constituents’ willingness to abide by new lockdown orders? The natives appear to be getting restless. Protests against new or stricter lockdowns have occurred in New York (here,  here and here) and California. There are also protests ongoing in Canada and across Europe. These types of protests have been occurring for several months. See this very interesting article by an ethnographer (I’ve never heard of that either) analyzing anti-lockdown protests in 15 cities.

One Colorado county has announced it will refuse to enforce state-mandated lockdowns.

What’s next? Cases are spiking across the country while the mass availability of vaccines is probably still months away. Will more schools be closed, businesses shuttered, holiday celebrations banned? Will leaders like Governor Newsom continue issuing edicts that they will follow, or not, as they choose?

UPDATE: DECEMBER 6, 2020

Here’s another one.

  1. Pompous ass hypocrits! Politicians are like babies diapers. They are usually full of shit and need to be changed often!

  2. So you open by politicizing Covid 19 and attack various democrats as hypocrites. Meanwhile, one of the biggest spreaders of the disease and misinformation about it is the White House. To wit; Trump, Melania, Barron, Trump Jr., Ronna McDaniel, Hope Hicks, Ben Carson, Stephen Miller, Kellyanne Conway, Kyleigh McEnany, Chris Christie, Corey Lewandowski ……… about 20 others, not to mention Herman Cain who died from Coronavirus after a maskless Trump event. Maybe the focus should be on following the science and beating this thing rather playing political gothcya. It’s real, it’s deadly, it’s not going away anytime soon without unity and cooperation guided by science, not politics.

    1. OMG!
      How terrifying!!!! (Not)
Liberal shitholes are the most dangerous places in the world as far as COVID, AIDS and gunshot wounds are concerned.
Avoid leftist cities and live your life.

    2. How am I politicizing the virus by pointing out the hypocrites who “lock down” their constituents and then turn around and violate their own rules? How is the White House spreading misinformation about the virus? President Trump is routinely criticized for his response to the Wuhan flu but he was shutting down travel from China beginning January 31, 2020. The very next day, Biden referred to him in a tweet as xenophobic (it wasn’t until April 3rd that Biden’s campaign acknowledged travel bans were appropriate). Two weeks later, Mayor DeBlasio, local politicians and others visited Flushing Queens, to let New Yorkers know Asian small businesses were open and ready for their business. Nancy Pelosi visited Chinatown in San Francisco on February 24,2020, proclaiming that people should still visit the area. And Trump gets it wrong.
Yes, members of his administration have come down with the virus, you say because of Trump’s/their bad judgement. Kamala Harris had to suspend her campaign for a few days in October because two people associated with the campaign came down with the virus. Governor Murphy had to abruptly cancel a press briefing in October because he was told that he had recently been in contact with a person who tested positive for the virus. What do you think Harris and Murphy did wrong that led to their campaign staff becoming infected?
And Biden is going to ask us all to wear masks for 100 days. What does he think we have been doing for the past several months? I guess his wife still doesn’t let him out of his basement much. Where’s the science in 100 days?

      1. To start with only Trump and his minions call Covid 19 the Wuhan flu. That’s political.
Mask wearing is proven effective. Republicans keep having rallies and other mass gatherings ignore masks and most of the other protocols. Half the White house has been positive. It’s a pandemic! There is no denying that fact, Ignoring Fauci or Birx in favor of elusive “rights” in a pandemic is why we are now breaking records daily, particularly in the midwest red states. Until we have widespread use of vaccines, and they are not coming nearly as soon or in the quantity promised, masks and social distancing are the front lines of defense. That, my friend, is science. My “right” to expose you and me to a potentially deadly disease and denial of same is not the way out of the disease that is ruining lives and the economy. You, Sods and I can’t go to Tierney’s because of this very real problem.

        1. First off….GOTCHA! When this thing hit the United States in early 2020, plenty of people referred to the virus as the Wuhan or Chinese virus, including several CNN anchors/reporters. It was only when President Trump started using that term that it became racist and/or xenophobic. And I will remind you, President Trump is not the only one who calls it the Wuhan virus.
I don’t disagree with most of what you say. I’ll wear a mask when I go to a bar or a store if that’s what it takes to keep these businesses open. But the fact that, for the most part, the virus is only deadly to the elderly and those with other comorbidities, makes me question the need to close schools, limit capacity at restaurants, declare certain businesses non-essential, etc. How many businesses are not coming back? How many people were not diagnosed early on with cancer because doctors’ visits are restricted? How many people are now suffering from drug/alcohol abuse, depression, etc., because of the lockdowns and resulting economic damage? And yet people can gather to protest freely in large groups, marching arm in arm, if it’s about white privilege?
Lastly, are you sure that mask wearing has been “proven” effective? But, to be fair, see this article discussing The Spectator article. There is still so much the experts don’t know about this flu. But I agree, we should wear masks and practice social distancing. BUT KEEP THE ECONOMY OPEN!

          1. No got. If you use the term “Wuhan” today you’re telling me an awful lot about your politics. Trust me, this isn’t my only serve and volley game.
It is absolutely science. Science is based on observation, data, hypothesis, experiment. It is always trying to improve. This thing is just becoming one year old. All the available data to date leans towards masks and social distancing.
It’s a pandemic. There is, by definition, suffering. Over 68 million people have caught it, about 43 million have recovered, over 1.5 million have died, the remainder will probably be suffering ill effects for the rest of their lives. Of course, there are adverse effects to the stringent measures required to fight it.
Of course businesses are suffering but they are also adapting. 300,000 Americans will have died of it by Christmas. Imagine what that number would be without the measures taken? Trump himself says 6 million.

  3. Studies by eminent, very bored, former string theorists have revealed the following DATA
A micro drop of mucus from the nose travels 18 feet in 5 seconds in a 2.5 mph draft’
The average sneeze travels from the mouth at 99 mph. Wowzer didn’t know that????
An off the sleeve calculation exists that would then calculate that at 18 feet a person downwind
of an infected drop of sneezed mucus, has about .0085 second to duck and if they duck the wrong direction, well it could be curtains. If theoretically the speed of sound was added to this equivalence then you have the chaos. Almost like the google, the chaos. Yes, there is symmetry in chaos.

  4. Rich McMahon has said it best. So…, ditto. Next, eliminate the political baloney. The Free Press is doing a great job of catching the “hypocrites”. All, including Newsome and Cuomo. Sometimes, once caught, they actually apologize. But better to follow the Newsomes and Cuomos than the Moron in Chief currently occupying the White House, aka, Orange Sphincter Nazi A-Hole. Next, follow the science, follow the medical professionals and follow other countries who have successfully battled this pandemic. South Korea is but one example. One size does not fit all. The policies addressing restaurants have been uneven and terrible. Clearly, the US has been one of the worst, if not, the worst example on the planet. Exceptions abound on the state level, yes, even in “Communist” California. My guess is that there will be a more coordinated, coherent effort on the national stage, once the new President is sworn in. But, the reality is that it will take months and months, or, at least a year, with vaccines, to bring the pandemic under control. One fact is clear, even for you Pete, the Moron currently in the White House, showed us what Not to Do. Bleach and ultra violet light will not be the way. Keep up the great work. Glad you’ve got the time. And, stay healthy, stay safe.

    1. Harry! Thanks for responding. Hope you and your family are safe and had a good Thanksgiving. I think we’re going to miss President Trump in two years. If not, I’ll admit on wrong.

      1. Leftists are never happy, but they will miss him in far less time than two years.
        Why, you ask?
Because they have perfected election and vote fraud, they don’t need their votes any more than they need ours now.
They can just tweak the algo and have pollsters, MSM and Social Media mop up any stragglers.
You will find that Sleepy Joe will go back to his NeoLiberal big business habits that he has had all his life.
So let me say it again – They don’t need your vote any longer to put whoever the establishment wants in office.
What happens when they don’t need your vote any longer? Do you get ANYTHING from them?
What did the black voters get once hispanics started pouring into this country? Nothing, and that’s what we all get now, from here on out.

        1. It is amazing the denial and sheer stupidity.
          1. There is a worldwide pandemic. It’s a fact.
          2. There was no voter fraud, even Barr has said so. It’s a fact.
          3. In fact, as a lawyer, I know that I would be sanctioned if not disbarred for bringing multiple frivolous lawsuits claiming election fraud without a scintilla of evidence. Fact.
          4. Look up terror attacks in the US and around the world. The vast majority are from the right wing. It’s a fact.
          5. Curious that these lefty cities happen to be the most desirable places to live. Fact.
